Artist Statement

My work is a meditation on perspective and the lived experience. Through my paintings, I celebrate freedom and the expansion of the senses, placing process and discovery at the center of my practice. Working in acrylic and oil, I begin intuitively, laying down broad swaths of paint and building fields of color that allow earlier layers to peek through the surface. I follow fleeting impressions of color and sensation, allowing each layer to inform the next. I use color as a language of light and possibility, often incorporating found papers and fabrics that carry traces of time and memory.

Drawing from personal photographs and archival imagery as loose frameworks, I gradually carve figures and landscapes into the accumulated layers, blending figuration with gestural abstraction. Forms emerge and dissolve, reflecting the fluid nature of memory and the poetics of being.

Biography

Adi Oren (b. 1989, New York, NY) is a New York-based painter whose luminous, layered canvases move between figuration and abstraction, drawing on archival imagery and personal photographs to explore memory, place, and belonging. Oren received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 and was an artist-in-residence at Residency Unlimited, Brooklyn, NY. Her recent solo presentations include SPRING/BREAK Art Show, New York, NY; Gallerie 271, Monterey, MA; and ChaShaMa, New York, NY. Recent group exhibitions include The Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI; Marinaro Gallery, New York, NY; McBride / Dillman, New York, NY; Jessica Hagen Fine Art, Newport, RI; Future Fair with Loft Projects, New York, NY; and Silvermine Galleries, New Canaan, CT. Her work has been published in Forbes, The Artful Mind, and FAD Magazine.

Oren painted a large-scale outdoor mural in the center of Ellenville, NY, a Hudson Valley town, during the summer of 2021, featuring diving figures that reflect themes of movement and transformation central to her work. She has been commissioned to produce numerous public works in restaurants around New York City, including a 25-foot site-specific painting for Acadia on 57th Street and 6th Avenue. Oren maintains a studio practice in New York City and Ellenville, NY, where she lives with her husband and two children.
